97 Country WPCV has been the most listened to radio station between Orlando and Tampa for as long as I can remember. Before their big Class C0 FM signal became encroached upon by translators, it could be heard from the Gulf to the Atlantic! Despite WPCV’s large coverage area, they’re #1 because they superserve their home market of Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Polk County. 97 Country has been live, local, and Country since before country was cool!
This was a typical evening on WPCV back in December, 1991. I recorded this from my residence, 6 miles south of Ocala, using a Realistic AM/FM/CD/cassette portrable stereo unit and Sony LN90 tape. An outdoor antenna was not needed. Before WSKY-FM 97.3 came on the air, WPCV could be received in Ocala with even a moderately sensitive radio and telescoping antenna. Today, the FM band is much more crowded in Central Florida. I would guess that a directional antenna would now be required to null out WSKY and obtain a clean signal from WPCV at this location.
