KZEV-FM 103.1 Mason City IA Don Pettilte 1988

Rock 103 was an interesting station.  I first became acquainted with them a few years earlier when I worked radio in Fort Dodge.  Although they used a “Rock” identifier, they were really a hybrid CHR/AOR.  This aircheck is a great example: you’ll hear them go from Chicago’s “Along Comes a Woman” to Transvision Vamp!  Seemed to work for them, though.

KZEV is long gone and the frequency allocation has been deleted. However, it is a direct descendant of Coloff Media’s KLKK-FM 103.7. Moving up 3 channels allowed a power upgrade from 3,000 to 25,000 watts.

This is either evenings or the overnight show. I received it from Apple Valley, MN, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, and Belden RG59 ultra loss coaxial cable.  My Sears stereo cassette deck and BASF 60 minute normal bias tape captured the recording.
