KVAA-AM 910 Brookings SD 1983

KV91 was one of those fun little small market CHRs.  Licensed to Volga, it primarily served nearby Brookings, the home of South Dakota State University.  I believe at some point, they began simulcasting with their FM sister station on 102.3.  Since you can hear the “KV91” jingle in this aircheck, we know the AM station was still dominant at this point in time.

Can you make out what the DJ is saying, after the Pretenders’ “Back on the Chain Gang?”  It sounds like “And now, if you place your hands on your radio…this is KVAA, Volga…(something something) most (something something) radio station.”  Since they were only 500 watts and I was about 200 miles away in Apple Valley, MN, I couldn’t hear them very well.

Reception was made using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver with a horizontal long wire antenna.  A Technics stereo cassette deck and TDK D90 tape was used for the recording.
