WMAD-FM 92.1 Madison WI Stray Cats Promo 1983

In the early 1980s, 92 M-A-D was The Mad City’s rocker.  They leaned Alternative before Alternative was cool.  As with the WZOK aircheck that I recorded on the same date, a couple of factors “lined up” to make reception of this station possible. First, an ice storm had opened up the FM band by enhancing the atmospherics.  Second, it was during the graveyard hours of Sunday morning.  This meant that two co-channel stations in my path to Madison were both off-the-air: WMEQ Menomonie and WRJC Mauston.  This catch was especially gratifying because WMAD was only 3,000 watts at the time.  Not bad from over 200 miles away as the crow flies!

The Stray Cats were huge at the time of this broadcast.  WMAD is giving away a complete package including concert tickets, bar tab, limo ride, etc.  Fun stuff!

Reception was made using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi antenna, Alliance rotor, Belden RG59 ultra low loss coaxial cable, Technics stereo cassette deck, and TDK SA90 tape.
