WBIZ-FM 100.7 aka “Z100” and WIAL-FM 94.1 aka “I94” were locked in a heated CHR battle during this time. As I mentioned on the WIAL page, that station had just flipped from automated Beautiful Music to CHR. Back in the 1980s, even small markets often had two CHRs in competition with one another. These were the “good ‘ol days” before corporate clusters and regional hubs!
Featured on this aircheck is the evening show with Greg Ramsey. Also included is an anti-drunk driving PSA, voiced by the Eau Claire District Attorney. I was 18 years old at the time and lived in Minnesota where the legal drinking age was 19. But I would routinely drive across the border to either Hudson or Prescott where I could drink legally all night at 18. In my intoxicated state, I would play this tape over the CB radio for all to hear as I was driving home. The joys of being young and stupid.
Reception was made from Apple Valley, Minnesota, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi antenna, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, and Belden RG59 ultra low loss coaxial cable. The tape was made on a Technics stereo deck with a Scotch Dynarange 90 cassette.
