KSDN-AM 930 Aberdeen SD Dan Zerr 1983

KSDN-AM was the premiere radio station in northeastern South Dakota for many years.  Despite having local FM competitors, AM radio was king in this region well into the 1980s.  Stations such as WNAX, KFYR, KSJB, KFGO, KWAT, and KSDN covered a lot of ground in the land of 30+ soil conductivity.

This aircheck was recorded about 200 miles from Aberdeen.  While at my grandparents’ house in Michigan, ND, I ran a dial scan and captured several stations on tape.  I was 19 years old and had just graduated from Brown Institute for radio broadcasting.  Needless to say, I was anxious for my first job, so I listened to and analyzed every station that I possibly could. Was I as good or maybe even better than some of these guys I heard on the small town stations? Perhaps I can take their job!

The recording was made using a Pioneer AM/FM/Cassette “boombox” and TDK D90 tape.
