Every radio geek looked forward to the Minnesota State Fair! “Normal” people came for the rides and the food. But we came to check out the radio station booths and DJs! Back in the 1980s, nearly all Twin Cities stations maintained a presence onsite for the duration of the Fair.
Michael Cross hosted 6-10PM on KJJO-FM aka “Hot Rockin’ 104.” The station came out of nowhere in 1987 and dominated 12-24 males. I believe at one point, they showed up with a 7 share, 12+. This was shortly before Cross left for Dallas to become part of the ZRock satellite network. I recorded this just before the tape ran out, so it’s all I have. But it’s enough to hear Michael give the Legal ID, followed by that infamous “THE Twin Cities ROCKER” sweeper, voiced by Joe Kelly.
This broadcast was received and recorded from Apple Valley, MN, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, Belden RG59 ultra low loss coaxial cable, Sears stereo cassette deck, and BASF 60 minute normal bias tape.
