For years, WJMC AM/FM has been full service radio for west central Wisconsin. This station used to be an easy catch from the Twin Cities, running 100,000 watts on 96.3. In 2000, KARP-FM 96.1 in Glencoe was sold, moved, and upgraded to 100,000 watts at 96.3. This station became Twin Cities rimshot KTTB “B96.” In order to facilitate this, WJMC was paid to drop one channel and downgrade to 50,000 watts. It is unfortunate that the FCC allowed this to happen. Minneapolis/St. Paul has several full 100kW FM stations. Now, there are none in the entire region of west central Wisconsin, outside of the Eau Claire market.
I recorded this aircheck from Apple Valley, Minnesota, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi antenna, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, and Belden ultra low loss RG59 coaxial cable. The recording was made with a Technics stereo cassette deck and a Scotch Dynarange 90 tape.
