KSJJ was “Kickin’ Country for Central Oregon.” In 1989, this was an up-and-coming station, having been recently purchased by suburban Portland broadcaster Don McCoun. Previously known as KPRB-FM, the call letters were changed and the target market was expanded to include all of Central Oregon. At this time, country music and Central Oregon real estate were both hot commodities. Each of them exploded in the years to come. Eventually, KSJJ upgraded their signal, moved into Bend, and became the #1 Country station in the market. It remains so today.
Carla Williams was a hometown girl from Redmond. She was the overnight voice of 103 Country. I worked with Carla the following year when I came over to do afternoons. She was one of those people who had a natural talent for radio. Never been on the air before, no formal training, she just “got it.” Carla could have gone on to bigger stations and markets, but she was smart enough to find a more lucrative career!
Also included here is a promo for 103 Country’s ongoing window sticker promotion. The voice belongs to “Blackjack” (Jack) Bergeron.
I recorded this from Madras, Oregon, using a Realistic AM/FM/CD/Cassette portable stereo with built-in telescoping antenna and Memorex dBS 90 tape.
